Or shall we now leave it to others to shape the world, while we snuggle down, Hobbit-like, in our national holes, and pretend there are no giants yomping overhead?

Just moment! Even in 1989, you, Europeans, had neither 'strategic boldness' nor 'historical imagination'. The US (+ M. Gorbachev) gave all these things for you.

ví dụ, hễ ở đâu đó,  người ta làm cái gì đó không như ở Mỹ, là lập tức các anh đến - xăng xái , chân tình, tự nguyện, vô tư, không vụ lợi như đối với việc của chính mình - giúp đỡ và nói: 'No, các bạn, No, không được làm thế này, phải thế này cơ.'

....thankfully, in The US still there is some ordinary guys:

Richard Fisher, senior fellow at the International Assessment and Strategy Center in Washington DC, listened to Xu's speech and found that important details were lacking. China's reluctance to become more transparent was driven home by Xu's decision to hand out a book - The Wisdom of Sun Tzu - as part of a gift package to members of the audience.

'Nearly 2,000 years before Machiavelli, Sun Tzu raised lying and deception to the acme of statesmanship,' said Fisher. Also, "there was no attempt [during Xu's speech] to satisfy demands for 'transparency' in areas of concern to the US and China's neighbors; no serious details on nukes, intentions versus Taiwan, Japan or future power projection plans."

'China's leaders have been trumpeting its 'peaceful rise' and the need for a 'harmonious world' for years, in part to allay regional concerns about China's expanding economic, political, and military power. Acting assertively in the Indian Ocean would only reinforce these concerns,' said Denmark.

As for the South China Sea, Willard has emphasized repeatedly that the US is going to hold firm and is not planning to exit under any circumstance.

It is downright striking how little attention the wider American discussion over foreign policy pays to Japan. After all, Japan still claims the title of the world's second largest economy (even if China is expected to overtake it next year). Its relationship with the U.S. has been as intimate as any other between major powers in the last 50 years. U.S. troops are still stationed there 64 years after the end of World War II. And to complicate matters, experts say there has been a longstanding worry on the Japanese side of being abandoned by the Americans.
